This unforgettable journey takes you through astonishing landscapes: from crystal-clear turquoise glacial lakes and majestic trails crossing the Andes mountain range to the lush cloud forest, culminating at mystical Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

More than a trek, this is an immersive travel experience. Along the way, you will enjoy comfortable accommodations with spectacular views of the Andes and the towering Mount Salkantay. You will also visit local coffee farms and participate in an authentic organic coffee workshop, learning firsthand about its cultivation and traditional processing.

Organic Coffee Experience & Support for High Jungle Families

The Salkantay Trek actively supports coffee-farming families in the Santa Teresa and Sahuayaco Basins. During the trek, you will participate in an experiential organic coffee workshop where direct economic benefits go to small Andean-Amazonian farmers, fostering sustainable development and biodiversity conservation in the cloud forest.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Challacancha – Humantay Lake – Soraypampa Base Camp

The tour begins with hotel pick-up in Cusco between 6:00 and 6:30 AM. We drive approximately 3 hours to Challacancha, where our hike begins. After preparing our gear, we set off along a gentle ascent for acclimatization.nnWe hike toward Soraypampa base camp and then tackle the climb to Humantay Lake (approx. 1 hour). At the summit, enjoy breathtaking turquoise glacial waters before descending back to camp at 3,900 m (12,795 ft). Enjoy a warm lunch and relax in our glass-dome cabins with panoramic mountain views.

Day 2: Soraypampa Base Camp – Salkantay Pass – Huayracmachay – Collpapampa

The most challenging day of the trek. After early hot coca tea and breakfast, we climb 3.5 hours to Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft), the highest point of the route, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and glaciers.nnAfter taking photos and learning about Andean cosmology, we descend 3 hours to Huayracmachay for lunch. We then continue descending 3 more hours to Collpapampa campsite (2,900 m / 9,514 ft) for a hot shower and dinner.

Day 3: Collpapampa – Wiñaypoco – Sahuayaco Beach – Hydroelectric – Machu Picchu Town

We trek through the high jungle and cloud forest, witnessing wild orchids, waterfalls, and tropical fruits. After a 3.5-hour hike, we visit a local coffee farm to participate in traditional organic coffee processing.nnAfter lunch, a short transport takes us to Hydroelectric station, followed by a scenic 10 km walk along the railway to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town). Check in to your hotel and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4: Machu Picchu Town – Machu Picchu Citadel – Ollantaytambo Station – Cusco

Early morning bus ride to Machu Picchu citadel. Enjoy a 2.5-hour guided tour exploring the temples, terraces, and royal quarters of this Inca wonder.nnAfterward, take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, enjoy free time for lunch, and board the train to Ollantaytambo, followed by private transport to your hotel in Cusco.

Weather and Clothing: The route features extreme temperature variation: from glacial cold at Soraypampa and Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft) to warm and humid cloud forest weather at Santa Teresa. Bring thermal warm layers as well as light clothing for warmer climates.
Duffle Bag (7 kg): Horsemen will transport up to 7 kg of your personal items in a duffle bag during mountain sections.
